Cake Decorations
What is the best surface for practicing cake decorations?
I just took Wilton Course 1 and I’d like to practice the techniques I learned. I don’t want to make a new cake every time I want to practice, let’s say, a shell border. That would be quite messy. What surface would you recommend for quick, easy cleanup and reuse?
A plate.
Plates are firm, easy to clean and unlikely to stain, and keep the mess off of your table or counter space. My mom has been baking and decorating cakes for years, and when she wants to practice a new technique, she grabs a plate and a bag of icing and gets to work. I’ve seen her invert the plates and used the raised center for borders and lace.
The master herself says she just likes to make a cake to practice, because then she can eat it afterward. In lieu of a cake, though, just grab a cake pan and turn it over–instant edge for borders, and you can wipe off the icing afterward. Roses and other flowers, of course, should be practiced on a flower nail and set aside to compare your results and see how your practice has paid off. If you need to practice decorations for the side of the cake, a can or cardboard oatmeal container should do the trick, though the oatmeal container shouldn’t be reused.
